September 11, 2001 - As It Happened - The South Tower Attack

10 years ago today, our country was attacked by terrorists.   Using jets loaded with passengers as weapons, they sought to destroy iconic buildings, kill our citizens and instill fear in our hearts.

Like most Americans, I was moved by the bravery and selflessness of the firefighters, police, rescue workers and ordinary citizens who put themselves into harms way to help the victims.

I was awestruck by the courage, resolve, dedication and precision of our military men and women who fought an evil, cowardly enemy that hid behind women and children, sought sanctuary in sacred and highly populated areas and savagely beheaded those that they had captured.  Not only did our military perform magnificently, it showed remarkable restraint and humanity in the superhuman effort displayed to protect those that were used as human shields, preserve the history and culture of the region and rebuild the schools, power plants and infrastructure to restore normalcy to peoples previously ruled by ruthless, self-serving tyrants.

As I traveled the country following these dastardly deeds, my spirits were lifted by the incredible outpouring of patriotism proudly displayed in small towns, front yards and the largest cities.  We knew our country was special.  We were one.  We were united.  The buoyancy of spirit that permeates the very fabric of our country was on display for the world to see.

As we remember the events of 9/11 and the challenges we have faced since then, let us reaffirm our commitment to each other and to this nation.  Let us remember what it means to be American.
